El Cotillo has perfect beaches and a more subdued ambience for that get away from it all holiday.Morro Jable and Jandia in the south also fit the bill. Caleta de Fuste just south of the airport is a purpose built resort with hotels and holiday complexes surrounding the shallow bay with imported sand from N Africa.Whatever your choice of holiday Fuerteventura has it all.
Fuerteventura is the second largest of the Canary Islands but the least commercial and undeveloped holiday island mainly due to its largely barren nature.Fuerteventura has developed as a holiday destination like most of the Canaries since the mid sixties but has lagged behind its more famous neighbours Tenerife, Gran Canaria and Lanzarote.Fuerteventura is the oldest of the Canaries dating back 20 million years but unlike its closest neighbour Lanzarote its most recent volcanic activity was four to five thousand years ago. The island is mainly flat except for the remnants of the volcanic activities and stretches 100 Km north to south and roughly 30 km across although at its narrowest in the south it is only five Km at Istmus de Pareded. Like Lanzarote, Fuerteventura is a water sports and sunlovers paradise and in recent years has become one of the top venues for kite boarding, surfing and scuba diving.Fuerteventura has over 150 beaches some of which never get crowded, a lot of which are isolated but the smaller beaches in and around the main resorts will get busy high season and week- ends.Fuerteventura is an all year round holiday destination. The winds die down in Winter so it is very pleasant indeed with average temps in 70s winter 80s + Summer.
Accommodation on Fuerteventura is similar to Lanzarote with mainly holiday complexes and apartments /private villas but there are also Hotels to choose from .The Riu and Barcelo chains have Hotels on the Island.
Corralejo is the main resort in the north. The resort is centred on the old town and harbour from which the Olsen and Armas ferries enter and depart. There is a Marina and trips can be enjoyed from here to the Island of Lobos with its shallow lagoons ideal for snorkelling or enjoy a walk to the top of the half eroded volcano but watch out for the sea birds at the summit. They aren`t too keen on visitors! If you plan a trip to Lobos be well prepared .There is no shade on the island except for one small bar so water and sunscreen are an essential. The breezes on Fuerteventura as on Lanzarote can really catch people out and result in bad sunburn. Corralejo has lots of restuarants and shops along the main stretch into the harbour and pleasant eateries alongside the harbour looking over the beach or the harbour. There is a water park called Baku on the outskirts just past the bus stop for the smaller resort of El Cotilllo. There are three or four beaches in the main resort area but a short 10 minute hop away you will find the world famous Corralejo Dunes. These beaches stretch for miles and are the venue for a Kite festival in November which is a site to behold. People come from all over Europe to show off their creations. It is possible to walk the entire length of the coastline from the harbour right up to the Dunes .Takes about 30 to 45 minutes. many holiday makers in Fuerteventura use the beach path as a jogging route early morning and early evening.Just by the harbour there is a Music Square where you can be entertained with live music as you eat a pleasant meal al fresco. Restaurants provide a cosmopolitan feel to the resort. There are Chinese, Italian, Indian and Spanish venues plus plenty of snack bars and sea food restaurants.Walking in Fuerteventura offers up experiences not to be missed. There are some interesting walks and some tricky walks. Most are doable for people of middling fitness. Key to enjoyable walking on Fuerteventura is to keep hydrated and wear appropriate footwear and head gear,Most walks offer little or no shade at all. The hard jagged volcanic rocks can play havoc with your feet!
The other resort in the north is much smaller and centres on the fishing harbour of El Cotillo.Just a few private appartments and villas dot the town with a few restaurants. This is a place to visit for a day on the beaches or if you want a really quiet break. Nightlife is fairly muted here but Corralejo is just a short 15 minute trip away. The quaint village of Villa Verde is just a few minutes from El Cotillo. There are private villas to be hired here also. There are two areas of beaches at El Cotillo. To the north of the harbour there are the shallow lagoons dotted with volcanic rock, an excellent and safe bathing option for families although be sure to take a wind break as the winds can be quite strong. If your kids love pottering round in rock pools then they will have fun here and there are soft white sands to relax on if rock pools aren`t your thing. To the south of the harbour there are the huge sweeping beaches that are the venue for the world kite boarding championships. Access to these beaches are from rather steep cliff top pathways so not really suitable for the elderly or less mobile. You get great surf on these beaches especially for body boarding but watch out for unseen rocks and take extra care when swimming. Close to shore and always swim parralell to the beach. Youngsters should be supervised at all times. They will get a real buzz jumping over the cool Atlantic breakers as they charge in. Conditions change at different times of the year so be aware of this and you will be fine. The bus from Corralejo takes about 30 mins depending upon which stop you get on at.They run quite frequently and costs 2 euros single. If you have a hire car its about 15 mins. There is plenty of free parking in El Cotillo on the rough track above the beach and in the village itself on road. This is also a stop off point for many of the quad bike tours on the island which are great fun and bookable through your hotel/apartments
